Explore Bourtzi
Bourtzi is the castle located on the island of Agioi Theodoroi in the middle of the port of Nafplion, which was closed for years and you can now visit by boat.
The castle is built on a natural rock and is considered one of the most important fortifications in Greece. It was built during the period of the 1st Venetian rule, 1471 to 1477, by the architect Antonio Gambello.
During the Greek Revolution it played an important role in the liberation of Nafplion. Bourtzi ceased to be used as a castle in 1865 when it was dismantled and became the place of residence of the guillotines. After World War II, it was repaired from bombing damages and operated as a luxury hotel hosting celebrities until the 1970s.
To visit Bourtzi you should take the small boats located in the port of Nafplion. The distance from the harbor is just 10 minutes and you may have a 20 minute tour.
The next time you visit the city of Nafplio, combine your stay at Amalia Hotel Nafplio with a visit to the revived Bourtzi for an unprecedented experience.
